We also love to have fun while helping those in need.At the breaking point. That’s how the situation with Toronto’s food banks was recently described by Neil Heatherington, CEO of the Daily Bread Food Bank.
In March alone, Daily Bread received 270,000 visits compared to 65,000 prior to the pandemic. A slow post-pandemic economic recovery combined with rising inflation for basic things like rent, transportation, and groceries, are creating a ‘perfect storm’ effect for those living pay cheque to pay cheque. Unfortunately, more and more households are resorting to food banks to make ends meet.
Over the last several years, the twice-annual Veritas Food Drive was worked to support food banks that are on the frontlines of the effort to address food insecurity in some of the most challenged communities in the city.
With the support of generous donors and committed volunteers, Veritas has raised over $10,000 for the purchase of dry goods such as cooking oil, rice, canned tuna, canned fruits and veggies, kids lunch snacks, and cereal and helped support thousands of households.
This spring, the Veritas Food Drive will once again work to support the Weston Area Emergency Support, a community-driven organization in Toronto’s west-end who serve the most vulnerable in the Weston Community.
Due to the ever-increasing demand, WAES has recently added more appointment slots to their food distribution days. They are now regularly helping over 100 households each day they are open, representing over 600 individuals each week – many of them young children and seniors.
The Veritas approach is simple – fundraise, purchase needed food, donate. Every penny of the money raised will go to the purchase of sorely needed dry goods serviced by WAES.
More than ever, this food drive is a necessary. Please consider supporting this needed work afford to give a little money and time to our food drive this spring.
It’s a fun morning of raiding a grocery store nearby, and hand-delivering the haul to the local food bank.
Donors and Volunteers are also invited to join a post-shopping spree barbecue and afternoon of fun.
