Borderland Pride is the 2SLGBTQIA+ Pride organization serving the Rainy River District in Northwestern Ontario/Treaty #3 territory. We are currently involved in human rights litigation impacting 2SLGBTQIA+ people in small communities across the province.
In Emo, a community of 1,400, the municipal council refused to adopt a resolution recognizing Pride Month in 2020 (or any year thereafter). They refused to adopt this resolution despite having done so in previous years and for other types of community events. The Mayor of Emo’s stated reason for refusing to support the proclamation was that there was no “straight Pride”.
The Ontario Human Rights Code prohibits discrimination by municipalities in the provision of a service. Borderland Pride has made a discrimination complaint to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO).
Funding raised through this campaign will help our organization to continue our advocacy work for all.

Often forgotten is the small town queer. Emo is small but the issue is huge. Keep up the Great work!
A Pride flag and a proclamation in support of Pride month is so much more than a celebration. It is fundamentally a message that you are safe here, that in this community we do not tolerate hate and will not sit by if it happens to you. You are free to be who you are in public spaces here and if anyone gives you trouble, you will be protected.
Human rights are worth fighting for.
