JUMP MATH

Every Child can be Good at Math

Founded in 2002 by Dr. John Mighton, JUMP Math is an award-winning charitable organization empowering educators and students to understand and love math in Canada, the United States and other countries worldwide. Equity is at our core. Our resources are uniquely structured to support every teacher to engage every student in every math class.

Students face 5 main barriers to learning math:

  • Math anxiety: When students feel anxious, they have trouble focusing.
  • Lack of confidence: Students who feel others are better at math are less likely to be engaged in their lessons.
  • Low self-expectations: A belief that success depends on natural ability rather than effort results in students doing poorly.
  • Information overload: The brain is easily overwhelmed by too much new information.
  • Missed concepts: Students who haven’t mastered basic math concepts struggle to problem-solve, see patterns, and make estimates and predictions.

JUMP Math has a Proven Pedagogy that Integrates Across the System

A SickKids and OISE research team conducted cluster-randomized controlled trial of the effectiveness of the JUMP Math Program of math instruction for improving elementary math achievement. The study indicated:
1. Students taught with JUMP Math made significantly greater gains in problem solving in year 2.
2. Teachers were able to take up the JUMP Math program and its positive impact, even in the relatively short-term.
3. Key measures of student math process point to a viable alternative for math instruction that could be a valuable, evidence-based addition to the teacher’s toolbox in schools and for additional support outside the schools.
